European digital nomad visas for Brazilian citizens

Brazilian passport holders enter the Schengen area visa-free for 90 days in any 180, which puts them closer to the American position than the South African one and opens in-country routes that visa-required applicants cannot use. The paperwork is the easy part: the federal police certificate is free and instant, and cartórios apostille documents over the counter. The hard part is money. Portugal's D9 wants roughly R$21,300 a month, around five to six times the average Brazilian income.

Leaving does not end it by itself

Brazil taxes residents on worldwide income under a progressive table topping out at 27.5%. Residency ends when you file the Comunicação de Saída Definitiva and then the Declaração de Saída Definitiva. Skip them and the Receita Federal keeps assessing worldwide income; absence alone only triggers non-residence after 12 consecutive months.

A wide treaty network, with one hole

Brazil has double-taxation treaties with Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Czechia, Hungary, Austria and much of the rest of Europe, but not Germany: that 1975 treaty was terminated and has had no effect since 2006. Reciprocidade de tratamento partly fills the gap for Germany, the UK and the US.

INSS stops when the activity does

A freelancer is an INSS contribuinte individual paying 20% of earnings up to the ceiling, or less on the simplified or MEI plans. That liability attaches to working in Brazil, so it generally stops once the saída definitiva is complete. You can keep contributing voluntarily to protect a Brazilian pension record.

No exit tax

Nothing is charged on unrealised gains on the day you leave. The saída definitiva is a filing obligation, not a valuation event. The risk runs the other way: not filing leaves you a Brazilian resident on paper.

Real-world quirks

The income threshold is the real barrier. Portugal's D9 asks about €3,680 a month, roughly R$21,300, against an average Brazilian monthly income closer to R$3,726.
Visa-exempt entry unlocks Spain's in-country UGE route, where someone already legally in Spain can apply for the teleworking permit without a prior visa. South Africans cannot use it.
Germany is the opposite trap: Brazilians may enter visa-free and apply for a permit inside Germany, but only where no work is intended, which is not a nomad's situation.
Portugal closed the in-country door. The manifestação de interesse route is gone, and a consular visa is now required before travel.
Visa-exempt is not the same as being waved through. Portugal refused entry to 749 Brazilians in 2025, almost always over proof of funds, though that was down about 49% on the prior year.
ETIAS is due to start in the last quarter of 2026 with a grace period. It is a €20 travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationals, not a visa, and it does not create a long-stay route.
Italian citizenship by descent used to absorb much of this demand and no longer does: Lei 74/2025 cut recognition back to children and grandchildren of Italians.
