What do people get wrong about the Hungary White Card?
- Underestimating timing by a factor of 2–3. The "60-day processing" line is real, but it's only the consulate's processing window. The door-to-door reality includes police clearance, apostille, consular appointment lead, and post-arrival registration, so most applicants land between 4 and 7 months.
- Skipping or mis-formatting the apostille. Apostille is the single most cited rejection reason. Every supporting document from your home country needs an apostille from the right authority, and they expire. Don't apostille more than 4 months before submission.

What Brazilian applicants typically submit
Documents needing an apostille (Brazilian authorities):
- The certified employer statement proving the purpose of residence. The White Card factsheet requires a 'certified statement from your employer' covering the employer's scope of activities, the remote-work authorisation and its duration, and the applicant's duties and position. Once a Brazilian employer statement is certified by a cartorio (the normal reconhecimento de firma route), it becomes a private document certified by a foreign notary, and the OIF recertification factsheet says such a document only has evidentiary effect in Hungary with an apostille attached.
- Company registration documents on the shareholder route: the Junta Comercial or registry certificate proving the real and actual operation of the Brazilian company, plus any Receita Federal certificate relied on to prove regular income or profit. These are Brazilian public documents (authentic instruments issued abroad) and fall squarely inside the OIF apostille rule.
- Any other Brazilian public document or notarially certified private document the regional directorate asks for while clarifying the facts of the case (the factsheet reserves that right explicitly).
Worth knowing: A Brazilian passport is the good case on this programme. Brazil sits in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, so the applicant enters Hungary visa-free for 90 days in any 180, and the OIF factsheet reserves in-country lodging precisely for nationals of visa-free countries. That means the Brazilian applicant gets the same shortcut as an American, a Briton or a Canadian, and not the mission-first route a Chinese or Indian applicant is forced onto. The Hungarian Embassy in Brasilia says so itself rather than leaving it to inference: Brazilians lodge the residence permit application in Hungary at the OIF and do not need to collect an entry visa from Brasilia or Sao Paulo first. Eligibility is not affected by nationality either, since the White Card only asks for a verified employment relationship or company shareholding in a country other than Hungary, and a Brazilian employer or a Brazilian company satisfies that as well as any. Where the Brazilian file is genuinely heavier than the US or UK one is documents: the income threshold is fixed at EUR 3,000 net per month in Hungarian law with no local-currency conversion, so BRL bank statements are judged on their euro value at whatever rate the assessing officer applies, and the certified employer statement or company registration documents have to carry a Brazilian cartorio apostille plus a certified Hungarian translation before they have evidentiary effect. On the bilateral side, the income tax convention signed 20 June 1986 has been effective since 1 January 1991 and is still on Hungary's official treaty list, but Brazil and Hungary have no social security agreement, so there is no certificate of coverage to fall back on if Hungarian contributions ever come into play.

How is White Card income taxed for Brazilian citizens?
No special tax regime. A holder is generally not a Hungarian tax resident if present under 183 days in a calendar year, in which case foreign income is typically not taxed in Hungary. Spending 183+ days can trigger Hungarian tax residency, subjecting worldwide income to the flat 15% personal income tax (subject to applicable double-taxation treaties).
What Brazilian tax still does
Brazil taxes on residence, not citizenship, but leaving does not end it by itself. Residency ends when you file the Comunicação de Saída Definitiva and then the Declaração de Saída Definitiva; skip them and the Receita Federal keeps assessing your worldwide income. Brazil has treaties with most of Europe, though not Germany, where the 1975 treaty has had no effect since 2006.

Critical nuance: the White Card's 'foreign income not taxed' only holds while NON-resident; once the nomad is Hungarian tax resident (183+ days), Hungary taxes worldwide income at the flat 15%. Treaty relief may reduce double taxation. Self-employed SS only bites if the person is in the Hungarian social-security system, foreign-employed nomads may stay on home-country SS.
Capital gains: 15%. Headline individual CGT is 15%. For some capital-type income a 13% social tax adds on top, but it is capped at 24x the minimum wage; publicly traded bond/fund gains are treated as interest income (13% social tax).
