How do Indian citizens apply for the Hungary White Card?
Can Indian citizens apply from inside Hungary?
Generally no: most applicants apply from outside Hungary before they travel.
The "fly in on a tourist stamp and convert" route is a widespread misconception and does not work for this visa. If you already hold legal residence in Hungary on another permit, different rules may apply, so confirm with the authorities.
How long does the Hungary White Card really take for Indian citizens?
9–10 weeks (≈ 2 months)
- Police clearance (typical)3w
- Apostille (typical)1w
- Consular appointment (typical)4w
- Processing 3–4w official3w
- Post-arrival registration (typical)2w
Official processing: 3–4 weeks. The rest is doc gathering + waiting in a queue, none of which the consulate counts.
Avoid these
What do people get wrong about the Hungary White Card?
- The tourist-stamp convert myth. Flying to Hungary on a tourist stamp and converting it into the residence visa from inside the country is not possible for White Card. Almost every application story that goes badly starts with this misconception.
- Underestimating timing by a factor of 2–3. The "60-day processing" line is real, but it's only the consulate's processing window. The door-to-door reality includes police clearance, apostille, consular appointment lead, and post-arrival registration, so most applicants land between 4 and 7 months.
- Skipping or mis-formatting the apostille. Apostille is the single most cited rejection reason. Every supporting document from your home country needs an apostille from the right authority, and they expire. Don't apostille more than 4 months before submission.
Worth knowing: India sits on Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, so the in-country shortcut is closed. The NDGAP factsheet reserves lodging inside Hungary for nationals of visa-free countries; an Indian applicant must file at a Hungarian mission in India and receive a D visa before flying. The bigger structural fact is what else is shut. Government Decree 450/2024, in force since 1 January 2025, restricts residence permits for the purpose of employment and for guest workers to the nationalities in its Annex 1, currently Georgia, Armenia and the Philippines, and the Delhi Embassy states plainly that India, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Maldives and Sri Lanka are not among them and that it will not issue appointments for employment D visa applications for an indefinite period. The White Card is untouched by that bar and both missions still list it, which makes it one of the few Hungarian routes actually open to an Indian passport. Eligibility itself does not disadvantage an Indian applicant: the White Card asks only for a verified employment relationship or company shareholding in a country other than Hungary, and an Indian employer or Indian company satisfies that as squarely as a US one. The documentary burden is heavier than the published Hungarian rules suggest. The Delhi Embassy's India checklist adds a Police Clearance Certificate, an income certificate from the tax authority for the previous year, six months of salary slips and a CV in English, none of which appear on the NDGAP factsheet's list of mandatory enclosures. The EUR 3,000 net monthly threshold is fixed in euros for the six months before entry with no rupee conversion, so INR statements are judged on their euro value on the day.
Tax
How is White Card income taxed for Indian citizens?
No special tax regime. A holder is generally not a Hungarian tax resident if present under 183 days in a calendar year, in which case foreign income is typically not taxed in Hungary. Spending 183+ days can trigger Hungarian tax residency, subjecting worldwide income to the flat 15% personal income tax (subject to applicable double-taxation treaties).
Money, roughly (sourced)
Regime: Hungary flat PIT, 15% on worldwide income (resident), about 46.5% effective tax on €60k/yr.
Critical nuance: the White Card's 'foreign income not taxed' only holds while NON-resident; once the nomad is Hungarian tax resident (183+ days), Hungary taxes worldwide income at the flat 15%. Treaty relief may reduce double taxation. Self-employed SS only bites if the person is in the Hungarian social-security system, foreign-employed nomads may stay on home-country SS.
Capital gains: 15%. Headline individual CGT is 15%. For some capital-type income a 13% social tax adds on top, but it is capped at 24x the minimum wage; publicly traded bond/fund gains are treated as interest income (13% social tax).
Living comfortably to well in Budapest runs about €1,400–€1,950/mo for one person, incl. rent. Roughly 97% more than the same living in Mumbai, which runs about ₹78,000/mo (≈ €710).

FAQ
Hungary White Card: common questions
Can Indian citizens get the Hungary White Card?
Yes. The White Card is open to Indian passport holders as non-EU nationals. The main requirement is proof of income of at least €3,000 per month.
Can I apply for the Hungary White Card from inside Hungary?
Generally no. Indian applicants normally apply at the Hungary consulate responsible for their region before travelling. Note this is about converting a short tourist stay; if you already hold legal residence in Hungary on another permit, different rules may apply, so confirm with the authorities.
How long does the Hungary White Card take for Indian applicants?
Official processing is 3–4 weeks. Door-to-door, including police clearance, apostille, consular appointment lead time, and post-arrival registration, most Indian applicants take about 3–4 weeks (roughly 1–1 months).
Do I need an apostille for the Hungary White Card?
Yes. Supporting documents issued in India (such as your police clearance) must be apostilled by the competent India authority before submission. Apostilles can expire, so don't obtain them more than a few months ahead of applying.
How much does the Hungary White Card cost?
The government application fee is about €110. The consular fee paid in India is approximately 11740 INR. Budget separately for police clearance, apostille (if required), translations, and required health insurance.
Can I bring my family on the Hungary White Card?
This route does not provide for family members to be sponsored on the same application. Family reunification would follow a separate procedure.
