How do British citizens apply for the Hungary White Card?
Can British citizens apply from inside Hungary?
Yes. British applicants may submit from inside Hungary.
How long does the Hungary White Card really take for British citizens?
14–18 weeks (≈ 3–4 months)
- Police clearance (typical)2w
- Consular appointment (typical)4w
- Processing 8–12w (typical)8w
- Post-arrival registration (typical)2w
Typical processing: 8–12 weeks. The rest is doc gathering + waiting in a queue, none of which the consulate counts.
Avoid these
What do people get wrong about the Hungary White Card?
- Underestimating timing by a factor of 2–3. The "60-day processing" line is real, but it's only the consulate's processing window. The door-to-door reality includes police clearance, apostille, consular appointment lead, and post-arrival registration, so most applicants land between 4 and 7 months.
- Income proof in the wrong currency. Bank statements showing income in your local currency are routinely rejected if the equivalent in EUR isn't clearly stated and consistent across the qualifying period (usually 3 or 6 months).
Worth knowing: UK nationals are eligible: the White Card is open to all third-country (non-EEA) nationals, and post-Brexit British passport holders qualify as third-country nationals. Because UK citizens enter Hungary visa-free for short Schengen stays, they may either apply at the Hungarian consular mission in the UK (via VFS Global) or travel to Hungary as a visitor and submit the application in-country through the Enter Hungary online platform or in person at a regional NDGAP/immigration office. Income requirement is EUR 3,000 net per month evidenced for the 6 months before entry (confirmed by the OIF White Card factsheet).
Tax
How is White Card income taxed for British citizens?
No special tax regime. A holder is generally not a Hungarian tax resident if present under 183 days in a calendar year, in which case foreign income is typically not taxed in Hungary. Spending 183+ days can trigger Hungarian tax residency, subjecting worldwide income to the flat 15% personal income tax (subject to applicable double-taxation treaties).
What British tax still does
Once non-UK-resident under the Statutory Residence Test, UK income tax and Class 4 NICs generally fall away on foreign self-employment, but becoming non-resident takes deliberate planning and the departure year can be split.
Capital gains back home: Foreign gains usually escape UK CGT once non-resident, but the temporary-non-residence rule can claw back gains if you return within ~5 years.
Leaving: No general UK exit tax on individuals.
The destination figures assume you have established non-UK tax residence.
Money, roughly (sourced)
Regime: Hungary flat PIT, 15% on worldwide income (resident), about 46.5% effective tax on €60k/yr.
Critical nuance: the White Card's 'foreign income not taxed' only holds while NON-resident; once the nomad is Hungarian tax resident (183+ days), Hungary taxes worldwide income at the flat 15%. Treaty relief may reduce double taxation. Self-employed SS only bites if the person is in the Hungarian social-security system, foreign-employed nomads may stay on home-country SS.
Capital gains: 15%. Headline individual CGT is 15%. For some capital-type income a 13% social tax adds on top, but it is capped at 24x the minimum wage; publicly traded bond/fund gains are treated as interest income (13% social tax).
Living comfortably to well in Budapest runs about €1,400–€1,950/mo for one person, incl. rent. Roughly 65% less than the same living in London, which runs about £3,400/mo (≈ €4,000).
