What do people get wrong about the Greece Digital Nomad Visa?
- The tourist-stamp convert myth. Flying to Greece on a tourist stamp and converting it into the residence visa from inside the country is not possible for Digital Nomad Visa. Almost every application story that goes badly starts with this misconception.
- Underestimating timing by a factor of 2–3. The "60-day processing" line is real, but it's only the consulate's processing window. The door-to-door reality includes police clearance, apostille, consular appointment lead, and post-arrival registration, so most applicants land between 4 and 7 months.
- Skipping or mis-formatting the apostille. Apostille is the single most cited rejection reason. Every supporting document from your home country needs an apostille from the right authority, and they expire. Don't apostille more than 4 months before submission.

What Brazilian applicants typically submit
Documents needing an apostille (Brazilian authorities):
- Certidão de Antecedentes Criminais issued by the Polícia Federal, apostilled at an authorised cartório. The Greek national D visa document list requires a criminal record certificate from the authorities of the country of residence issued within the last 6 months.
- State-level certidão de antecedentes criminais from the Secretaria de Segurança Pública or Tribunal de Justiça of each state lived in, where the consular section asks for it alongside the federal certificate. Each state certificate is a separate request and a separate apostille.
- Birth certificate (certidão de nascimento) and marriage certificate (certidão de casamento) where a spouse or children are included, since the income floor rises by 20% for a spouse or partner and 15% per child and the family link has to be proved.
- Documents proving the applicant's activity abroad where they are Brazilian public records rather than private contracts, for example a Junta Comercial or Receita Federal registration extract for a Brazilian company or MEI used as the vehicle for the remote work.
Worth knowing: Brazil is on Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, so a Brazilian passport enters Greece visa-free for 90 days in any 180 and no short-stay Schengen visa is needed to look around. Until early 2026 that exemption was worth far more than a look around: article 12 par. 7 of Law 5038/2023 let a digital nomad who had entered under a visa waiver apply for the I.8 residence permit from inside Greece, skipping the consulate entirely, and a Brazilian could use it while a Chinese or Indian applicant could not. Law 5275/2026, published in FEK A 17 on 6 February 2026, removed that option: the national digital nomad visa (type D) must now be obtained from a Greek mission before entry, and the residence permit is applied for after arrival. The single biggest advantage a Brazilian passport had on this programme is gone, and any guide written before February 2026 that tells Brazilians to fly in on the 90-day exemption and apply locally is now wrong. What remains distinctive is cheap and fast documents against a hard income floor: the Polícia Federal certificate is free and issued online in minutes and a cartório apostilles it over the counter, but the EUR 3,500 monthly income requirement is roughly R$20,300 at July 2026 rates, about five and a half times the average Brazilian monthly income of R$3,726 reported by IBGE. On the two treaty questions the answers point in opposite directions. There is no double-taxation treaty between Brazil and Greece: the Receita Federal's official list of agreements in force does not include Greece, so a Brazilian who has not completed the saída definitiva can face Brazilian worldwide taxation alongside Greek residence taxation with no treaty tie-breaker and no treaty credit article. Social security is the opposite: the Brazil and Greece agreement has been in force since 1 September 1990, is listed by the Ministério da Previdência Social among the bilateral agreements in force, and e-EFKA publishes the Portuguese-language application forms for it, so INSS and Greek contribution periods can be totalised.

How is Digital Nomad Visa income taxed for Brazilian citizens?
Digital nomads who become Greek tax residents (over 183 days/year) are taxed on worldwide income at progressive rates. A special relocation regime under article 5C of the Income Tax Code (Law 4758/2020) grants a 50% exemption on Greek-source employment or business income for up to 7 years, conditional on not having been Greek tax resident for 5 of the prior 6 years and taking up new activity in Greece. Because the regime targets Greek-source income, its application to a nomad's foreign-source remote income is contested and not automatic.
What Brazilian tax still does
Brazil taxes on residence, not citizenship, but leaving does not end it by itself. Residency ends when you file the Comunicação de Saída Definitiva and then the Declaração de Saída Definitiva; skip them and the Receita Federal keeps assessing your worldwide income. Brazil has treaties with most of Europe, though not Germany, where the 1975 treaty has had no effect since 2006.
