How do Indian citizens apply for the Greece Digital Nomad Visa?

Can Indian citizens apply from inside Greece?

Generally no: most applicants apply from outside Greece before they travel.

The "fly in on a tourist stamp and convert" route is a widespread misconception and does not work for this visa. If you already hold legal residence in Greece on another permit, different rules may apply, so confirm with the authorities.

How long does the Greece Digital Nomad Visa really take for Indian citizens?

8–18 weeks (≈ 2–4 months)

  • Police clearance (typical)3w
  • Apostille (typical)1w
  • Consular appointment (typical)4w
  • Processing 2–12w (typical)2w
  • Post-arrival registration (typical)2w

Typical processing: 2–12 weeks. The rest is doc gathering + waiting in a queue, none of which the consulate counts.

Avoid these

What do people get wrong about the Greece Digital Nomad Visa?

  • The tourist-stamp convert myth. Flying to Greece on a tourist stamp and converting it into the residence visa from inside the country is not possible for Digital Nomad Visa. Almost every application story that goes badly starts with this misconception.
  • Underestimating timing by a factor of 2–3. The "60-day processing" line is real, but it's only the consulate's processing window. The door-to-door reality includes police clearance, apostille, consular appointment lead, and post-arrival registration, so most applicants land between 4 and 7 months.
  • Skipping or mis-formatting the apostille. Apostille is the single most cited rejection reason. Every supporting document from your home country needs an apostille from the right authority, and they expire. Don't apostille more than 4 months before submission.

Worth knowing: India is on Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806, so an Indian passport needs a visa for every Schengen entry and there is no visa-free trip to look at apartments first. Until February 2026 that mattered less for Greece than for anywhere else, because Article 12 par. 7 of Law 5038/2023 let a digital nomad already inside Greece on a tourist Schengen visa apply for the residence permit directly, provided they produced a Greek lease or property purchase contract. Law 5275/2026, published in FEK 17/A on 6 February 2026, abolished that route. Every applicant must now hold a national type D digital nomad visa issued by a Greek consular authority before entering, which for an Indian applicant closes the only workaround the programme had. Consular geography then does the rest of the damage: GVCW is the exclusive service provider for Greece in India and takes long-stay D files at exactly one address, the New Delhi centre, whether the applicant lives in Kochi or Guwahati. The Greek file is also heavier than several competing routes. Greece asks every applicant for an apostilled police clearance certificate no more than three months old, a medical certificate submitted after an in-person Embassy interview, and a signed solemn declaration that no work will be provided to a Greek employer or client.

Tax

How is Digital Nomad Visa income taxed for Indian citizens?

Digital nomads who become Greek tax residents (over 183 days/year) are taxed on worldwide income at progressive rates. A special relocation regime under article 5C of the Income Tax Code (Law 4758/2020) grants a 50% exemption on Greek-source employment or business income for up to 7 years, conditional on not having been Greek tax resident for 5 of the prior 6 years and taking up new activity in Greece. Because the regime targets Greek-source income, its application to a nomad's foreign-source remote income is contested and not automatic.

Regime: 50% reduction (7 yrs), about 15% effective tax on €60k/yr.

50% income-tax break for the first 7 years for qualifying new tax residents; conditions apply. Freelancer social (EFKA) is a fixed monthly category amount (roughly €240 to €650), not a % of income, so it isn't folded into the rate here.

Living comfortably to well in Athens runs about €1,500–€2,100/mo for one person, incl. rent. Roughly 111% more than the same living in Mumbai, which runs about 78,000/mo (≈ €710).

Worth a specialist's time. A short call before you commit usually pays for itself, especially for US citizens (FEIE/FATCA), existing UK ties, or unwinding SA tax residency.
