Greece ends in-country switching for the Digital Nomad Visa

Under Law 5275/2026, Greece no longer lets you enter as a tourist and switch to the digital nomad residence permit from inside the country. The Type-D visa must be secured at a Greek consulate before you travel.

What changed

Greece has closed the in-country route to the digital nomad residence permit. Previously some applicants entered on a short-stay Schengen visa (or visa-free) and lodged the residence-permit application after arriving. Law 5275/2026 ends that: the national Type-D digital nomad visa must now be obtained at a Greek consulate in your country of residence before you travel.

When

Effective 5 February 2026.

Who's affected

New applicants for the Greece Digital Nomad Visa, regardless of passport. It matters most for nationalities that can enter Greece visa-free for short stays (US, UK, Canada, Australia), since arriving first and sorting the permit later is no longer an option. Plan the consular step, and the apostilled police certificate it needs, before booking travel.

Verify

Confirm the current process and document list with the Greek consulate handling your application before you start.
