Digital Nomad Visa (Identification Certificate)
Official nomad visaChinese citizens can enter Turkey visa-free for a short stay, but the Digital Nomad Visa is still a separate application. Chinese applicants apply through a Turkey consulate abroad; a tourist stay cannot be switched to this permit. The consulates Chinese applicants usually deal with are in Consulate General of Türkiye, Guangzhou, Consulate General of Türkiye, Chengdu, and Consulate General of Türkiye, Hong Kong. Allow about 1 week for the Chinese police clearance, which then needs an apostille. China and Turkey have a double-tax treaty.
How do Chinese citizens apply for the Turkey Digital Nomad Visa?
Can Chinese citizens apply from inside Turkey?
Generally no: most applicants apply from outside Turkey before they travel.
The "fly in on a tourist stamp and convert" route is a widespread misconception and does not work for this visa. If you already hold legal residence in Turkey on another permit, different rules may apply, so confirm with the authorities.
How long does the Turkey Digital Nomad Visa really take for Chinese citizens?
14–18 weeks (≈ 3–4 months)
- Police clearance (verified)1w
- Apostille (typical)1w
- Consular appointment (typical)4w
- Processing 8–12w (typical)8w
- Post-arrival registration (typical)2w
Typical processing: 8–12 weeks. The rest is doc gathering + waiting in a queue, none of which the consulate counts.
Avoid these
What do people get wrong about the Turkey Digital Nomad Visa?
- The tourist-stamp convert myth. Flying to Turkey on a tourist stamp and converting it into the residence visa from inside the country is not possible for Digital Nomad Visa. Almost every application story that goes badly starts with this misconception.
- Underestimating timing by a factor of 2–3. The "60-day processing" line is real, but it's only the consulate's processing window. The door-to-door reality includes police clearance, apostille, consular appointment lead, and post-arrival registration, so most applicants land between 4 and 7 months.
- Skipping or mis-formatting the apostille. Apostille is the single most cited rejection reason. Every supporting document from your home country needs an apostille from the right authority, and they expire. Don't apostille more than 4 months before submission.
Documents
What Chinese applicants typically submit
Documents needing an apostille (Chinese authorities):
- Notarial Certificate of No Criminal Record (无犯罪记录公证书), where the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management asks for a criminal record certificate on the short-term residence permit file
- Chinese civil-status notarial certificates (marriage, birth) where a spouse or minor children are added to the file
- Notarised copy of the Chinese business licence (营业执照) where the applicant relies on their own Chinese-registered company to evidence income from outside Türkiye
Worth knowing: The headline fact is a closed door. Türkiye's official GoTürkiye digital nomad platform restricts the Digital Nomad Identification Certificate to citizens of 36 named countries: the EU and EEA states, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the USA, Canada, the Russian Federation, Ukraine and Belarus. China is not among them, so a Chinese passport holder cannot obtain the certificate at any age, income or education level, and the certificate is the gate that unlocks the visa and residence steps for this route. The second fact cuts the other way and is recent: a Presidential Decree published in the Official Gazette of 31 December 2025 made Chinese ordinary passport holders visa-exempt for Türkiye for up to 90 days in any 180-day period from 2 January 2026, a unilateral move on Türkiye's part, since Turkish citizens still need a Chinese visa. So a Chinese nomad has the easiest possible entry to Türkiye and the hardest possible access to its nomad programme. What remains is the ordinary short-term residence permit under Articles 31 to 33 of Law No. 6458, applied for from inside Türkiye through e-ikamet, on a listed ground such as tourism, business connections or property ownership, with no digital nomad ground available. On the money side, the China-Türkiye double taxation agreement was signed in Beijing on 23 May 1995, entered into force on 20 January 1997 and has applied from 1 January 1998, so treaty relief exists. There is no social security agreement: China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security counts 13 bilateral social security agreements signed since 2001, covering Germany, South Korea, Denmark, Finland, Canada, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Luxembourg, Japan, Serbia and Kyrgyzstan, and Türkiye is not one of them.
Tax
How is Digital Nomad Visa income taxed for Chinese citizens?
Turkey taxes on residency. A person who stays in Turkey for more than 183 days in a calendar year (or has a habitual abode there) becomes a Turkish tax resident and is liable to Turkish income tax on worldwide income; double-taxation treaties may apply and can override domestic residency determination. There is no special digital-nomad tax exemption attached to this route.
What Chinese tax still does
China taxes on residence rather than citizenship, but residence is wider than the day count suggests. Keeping your hukou, your family and your economic ties can leave you China-domiciled and taxable on worldwide income even at zero days in the country, and deregistering the hukou is only available on genuine emigration, not on a nomad visa. Assume double residence in year one and plan around the treaty tie-breaker.
Money, roughly (indicative)
Regime: Foreign income (foreign account) generally untaxed, about 0% effective tax on €60k/yr.
Income earned abroad and received into a foreign account is generally not taxed in Turkey, and you owe no Turkish social contributions unless you register as a local entrepreneur (SGK is voluntary). Over 183 days can make you tax-resident. Verify with a local advisor.
