Tax
How is Nomad Residence Permit income taxed?
Under the Nomad Residence Permits (Income Tax) Rules (S.L. 123.210, introduced by Legal Notice 277 of 2023, effective 1 January 2024), income from authorised remote work is exempt from Malta income tax for the first 12 months from the date the permit is issued (or from 1 January 2024, whichever is later), after which a 10% flat tax applies to that authorised-work income. Main applicants may opt in to taxation earlier by written declaration. Relief from double taxation is available. The Residency Malta Agency does not provide tax advice and directs applicants to seek independent advice.

Regime: 10% flat (after 12 months tax-free), about 25% effective tax on €60k/yr.
Authorised remote income is tax-free for 12 months, then a flat 10% (vs Malta's usual rates up to 35%). A self-employed (self-occupied) person pays Class 2 social of ~15% of net income; nil if you stay employed abroad or a totalisation agreement keeps you in your home system.
Living comfortably to well in Valletta runs about €1,900–€2,650/mo for one person, incl. rent.
